Hugh M Roberts, Surveyor
Marine surveyor and senior marine engineer, with a career spanning the Royal Navy and the international maritime industry.
MSc, GradIIMS. IIMS Professional Qualification in Commercial and Cargo Ship Surveying (Advanced PQ in Marine Surveying, yachts, in progress). MCA Chief Engineer (Yacht) Y1, STCW III/2, 3000GT / 9000kW. MCA Engineering Officer of the Watch (Unlimited) III/1. Ex-Royal Navy nuclear submarine engineer. ISM/DPA trained (DNV-accredited course).
From Nuclear Engineering to Marine Surveying
He began his career as an Engineering Artificer in the Royal Navy Submarine Service, where he progressed to nuclear reactor control and watchkeeping. That work included operating the reactor control rods and monitoring the reactor plant.
A safety-critical nuclear environment demands procedural discipline, technical competence, attention to detail and decisions based on evidence. The same principles shape how he surveys: observe carefully, establish the facts, understand the engineering system, assess risk objectively and report clearly.
International Marine Engineering Experience
After the Navy he served as a seagoing engineer worldwide, including 11 years as Chief Engineer on vessels up to 90m, often in remote locations. His experience covers:
- Propulsion, power generation and auxiliary machinery
- Electrical, automation and control systems
- Planned and condition-based maintenance
- Machinery fault diagnosis and failure investigation
- Shipyard periods, refits and major engineering projects
- Classification and statutory survey support
- Machinery overhaul, commissioning and technical project management
Our Approach
We take on yacht and commercial surveys. Our particular strengths are machinery and engineering systems, technical condition assessment, defect investigation and complex technical matters. Every survey is carried out with the same standards of technical integrity, disciplined inspection and evidence-based assessment.
Clients get independent, thorough and practical reports. Each one sets out the facts, identifies the material findings and explains what they mean for the vessel’s condition, safety, reliability and operation.
Independence
VO Survey operates independently of our servicing work. Any connection between VO Marine and a vessel or matter we are asked to survey is declared before we accept the instruction, and we will decline where independence could reasonably be questioned.
Survey Scope
Indicative scope. Final survey types and terms confirmed on enquiry.
Condition Surveys
Independent assessment of hull, machinery and systems with a prioritised defect and remedial works report.
Pre-Purchase Inspections
Detailed pre-purchase surveys with sea trial attendance, giving buyers an evidenced technical position.
Damage & Insurance Surveys
Damage cause investigation and repair scope, with clear, factual reporting for owners and insurers.
Compliance & ISM Readiness
SMS readiness reviews and DPA support ahead of flag or class attendance.
Terms of Engagement
All surveys are carried out under our standard Terms of Engagement, with a written Survey Confirmation agreed before each inspection.
